Working from Home
Well it’s 45 degrees in the studio right now. All this wonderful Michigan winter weather (a week of below of 0s!) has tested the limits of the heating system in my studio.
And as such - rather than stress the system with attempting to keep it a comfortable temperature, I’m setting it at 55 so the pipes don’t freeze and will be working from home for a few days .
I do sometimes miss the ease at which I could slide into work mode at my in-home studio. 7 am, the sun is barely up and I could just start working in my pjs while the dog sleeps.
I’ll try to focus on that feeling and less on not having all my supplies.
Making the Puzzle Pieces
I’m starting to make the work for the spring edition of The Other Art Fair in Chicago, using sketches from California, northern Ohio and a smattering of locations around Michigan. This collection is rooted in environment; in color studies made from sunsets and pencil drawings made of sandstone formations - fragments of the natural world reassembled.
I’ll have more information on the fair coming shortly. It will be held at Artifact Events in Ravenswood again this year and I am so looking forward to it.
New Paper Pieces
I had a few appointments/events cancel this week and ended up with my favorite thing in the world; found time.
So I put it to good use and worked on a three pieces that have been circling my sketchbook for a little while.
Cut paper on paper, exploring texture, layering and the juxtaposition of color.
2025
Happy 2025 to all.
Excited to share that I have two pieces in the show Chroma, from the Orion Art Center in Lake Orion Michigan.
Henge 5 and Meteorite will be on view and available for purchase from the gallery during the month of January. I’ll be heading there at some point in the next weeks to go see the show for myself - let me know if you are planning to go see it!
Coming in March;
Another installation of the Chicago session of The Other Art Fair! I’ll be showing all new pieces at this years fair, taking place at Artifact Events March 27th - 30th. More information to follow.
Wishing you all a warm, safe and happy start to the new year.
What I’m Reading
(june 3oth) I grew up (as I suspect many of us artists born in the 80s did..) learning about Pollock. Not Krasner.
In my attempts to fill in the narrative with perspectives from artists that are not old, white and male this is the next book in my line up for summer reading.
I don’t remember when I first came across Lee Krasner’s work, but it’s been there in the periphery of my art historical knowledge for a little while. I enjoy it, but don’t quite have the same grasp on her story as I do Helen Frankenthaler or Joan Mitchell (my other favorites!) so I’m looking forward to learning.
